Despite how busy life is these days, my kids keep getting older and having the most wonderful birthday parties! Baby A turned 3 this year, and she had just two requests: (1) a unicorn birthday party with (2) a rainbow cake. Huh. You guys know me, I am not one to do the standard, cliché, seen it a million times, typical theme birthday parties…so having to do yet another unicorn birthday was not really jiving with me. If you recall, Baby J also wanted a unicorn party last year, but to be creative and different we went with a Zombie Unicorn theme; so, doing this more traditional party was a challenge. But I think we pulled off something a little different than the average Pinterest/Google Images unicorn party.
For starters, I wanted it to have a mythical, magical, enchanted forest vibe, with wisteria flowers overhead and the smell of lilacs and jasmine in the air. However, I wasn’t willing to purchase a bunch of faux flowers—because what would I do with them after!? So, I drew the background using some images I found online and pasted together, and my niece and I coloured it with crayons once it was up on the wall. Actually, I wanted it to look like a photoshoot my best friend Mimi and I did in this amazing enchanted forest where I was wearing the most beautiful 1980’s lilac bridesmaid dress (from my parent’s wedding), here are just a few of the enchanting photos she took. Head to Mimi’s Instagram to see more photos from this shoot, it was unreal! Without the faux florals I didn’t quite get the same luscious vibe as the photoshoot…but, close enough!

As for the rainbow cake, the last thing I wanted was to do some complicated multi-coloured icing creation, and I think the extra tall naked cake with simple vanilla buttercream actually was quite lovely, and Baby A was impressed! The cake topper was just a unicorn picture my niece found online that we printed on cardstock, cut out and inserted it into the top of the cake.

I may have gone a little overboard with all the doughnuts, but, you only live once! I made a gluten free cinnamon and sugar doughnut, a double chocolate donut, and a pink and turquoise vanilla dip with Grandmama’s homemade sprinkles donut, and they were all delicious! We also did Oreos dipped in candy melts, Smartie Kiss Pretzels, Nutella Fairy Sandwiches, Sprinkled Rice Crispy Squares, Sugar Cookies, Mini Cupcakes, Vanilla Cupcake Goldfish Crackers, and quite possibly the best of them all, Two Bite Brownie Strawberry Banana Marshmallow Shish kabobs! Yummy!

…but true to form, my kids hardly ate a thing. Like, come on, what?! Seriously, I think perhaps one single donut was consumed the entire party, and we didn’t even bother cutting the cake because nobody wanted to eat it. WHAT. IS. WRONG. WITH. THEM!?!? They were quick to eat those Walmart sugar cookies and mini cupcakes, however (forehead slap).
Sofia the First has not replaced Anna and Elsa, but she’s definitely giving the sisters a run for their money!

Possibly the most fun part of the birthday party of all was that the travelling carnival was in town! The girls all wore coordinating dresses, and even I was in a cute little yellow sundress and Baby K in his favourite Thomas the Train hat. It was fun to go with the whole family to the fair and see the kids experiencing rides (some rides being more enjoyable than others hahah). It was a great finale for Baby A’s third birthday party!

I’ve got another birthday party to share with you, Baby K turning 5, stay tuned!
